Back in the days when 'The Living Room' was on the corner of Stanton and Allen I found a note alongside a name on my mailing list. The person commented on a song I had played, 'Sacred Bells', and asked me to give her a call. I did. It was the photographer Linda Troeller. Linda had been working on a project about women. I think she had photographed in something like forty countries. There were thoughts of an exhibit, maybe my performing. The first step was meeting. I remember sitting in a booth with Linda at the little place on St. Marks named 'Jules.' I would sometimes go there with friends after one of my gigs. We just got along immediately. Soon after that I visited her at the Chelsea Hotel where she lived. I think she has lived there for ten years now. I had never been there before. As I had a reason to be there I didn't feel I was somewhere too strange. I prefer not to take an elevator, so I began climbing the huge staircase up to her room. Next thing i knew I was in her bathroom applying makeup. Linda didn't use lights. She never did with me. The very first photograph she ever took of me ending up being the cover of the CD I was next to release, ' 'Woman Under The Influence.' She took lots of photos that day, in her room, in the hallways, in someone else's room. We met again when she was putting all her 'Women' images together for what would be her second book, 'The Erotic Lives Of Women.' I sort of slipped into the pile and had the distinction of not only being the last of many women photographed for her project, but one of the images she did of me was chosen by the publishers to be the cover of the book. A short time after the release of the book I was in a photography bookstore in Santa Monica and saw her book displayed on the large table of new releases. A gentleman was looking at the books, alighted on hers, looked up at me and said,' Is this you?' Uh huh. I have been a very lucky person regarding Linda Troeller. She has taken photographs of me through the years, documenting my life in images. It is always easy, it is never contrived. She is a master. Her work has graced three of my CD's. I thought it was high time I shared some of the fruits of our work/friendship. To see more of her work please go to lindatroeller.com ...Pal |
